(1) did you turn off "Instant success" under "Difficulty (2nd page) settings in-game?
The slowdowns are probably due to too high intensity settings. check [DGen]] section in conf.ini, maybe lowering the intensities will help

GroundIntensity=Low
Values can be "Low", "Normal" or "High"
It depends a lot on the power ofyour system and available RAM.
The low fps may be fixed by this too.

The Finland map being used is because there is no good map to simulate D-Day and the Finland map at least comes close.
GMX Media did underestimate the needed system. you need a far more powerfull system than the 800MHz 256 MByte they give as a minimum. Maybe they got a bit confused with their BoB WoV
