This book is different from those in the other reviews I have done , as it is not the story of one pilot but of many. It is a collection of stories , poems, analysis and remembrances of pilots and commanders, from many nations , who flew in WW2. The main exception is from the Soviet Union pilots and the author explains why in his book.
The book is laid out in seven main parts, each covering a stage of the war. Within each part are the stories, from individual authors or contributors, which relate to this period .
By doing this Laddie Lucas gradually builds up a history of the war as told by those who fought and flew in it. At the start of each section and as an introduction to some of the contributors Laddie Lucas gives a brief overview and then allows the stories to speak for themselves. He weaves the narratives together and gives the reader a subtle introduction to the stories.
This is a good book for dipping into as most of the articles are short and is a very good introduction to many characters and theatres of operations that have not been covered by the usual books of the air war.
I really like this book and have returned to it many times.
