UQMG users with Windows 98SE and Windows ME

Postby UberDemon on Tue Mar 01, 2005 5:49 pm

Dear UQMG users,

I apologize for the troubles that Windows 98 SE and Windows ME are having with UQMG. To make a long story short, UQMG is no longer compatible with either of these two older operating systems (OS).

The Ground Objects Editor (GOE) uses resources that neither OS is capable of handling. Today there is only one solution. You must use a PC that has an "NT"-based operating system, namely Windows XP.

To stress this point, an 800MHz machine with 256MB RAM using Windows XP will be able to run UQMG, while a 1GHz+ machine with 1GB RAM running Windows ME or 98SE will not.

With this said, I will work on a fix for UQMG that automatically detects whether your machine has the resources to run UQMG or not, automatically adjusting for the different OS... however, if you do not have XP you will NOT be able to use the Ground Objects Editor. You will be able to use all other UQMG functions except for the GOE.

There is no way around that unless I simply remove functionality from UQMG and the GOE and I am not willing to do that (that is, taking a step backwards), especially considering the majority of users today are using XP in conjunction with FB and PF.

I hope you understand this, and recommend that you upgrade to XP in order to improve performance of both FB/PF and UQMG. Again, I am not an MS proponent, or employee, however this exercise has shown me that XP has better memory management than the older home OSs, and that there is a performance gain in using it for FB/PF. It bothered me so much that I dished out $99 for an XP upgrade for my Laptop today.

I do not have a release for this update to UQMG yet, but when it is released, you will still get a lot of fun out of UQMG, until that time you see fit to move up to XP, and then you will see what GOE really gives you. It is quite incredible, especially the automatic ground object matching capability.
Best Regards,

Islolating GOE

Postby Bomber-Burn on Fri Mar 04, 2005 9:54 pm

I'm one of the guys with Windows 98SE and the same loading error.
Is there a way to isolate the GOE if thats what causing the problem?
Then I'll be able to run UQMG and us the other new features, planes, maps, ships ect. from Pacicfic fighters.
Is there a way not to install, load or run that part (GOE) of the program so I can use the rest? If so how?

Thanks for all your great work,
Kent :D

Cloyd is correct.

I am also happy to say that today I tested the new version in a Laptop with Win ME and 256KB Ram and it worked. I should release it within the next two days, and it includes other fixes plus a "surprise" new map.

:)

Although I use Windows XP and am therefore not one of the unforunate souls to have suffered this problem - I have been following this issue quite closely. ( I'm a UQMG geek!)

Anyway I have to say "Well done" UberDemon on providing first-class customer service.

You should really start charging for this you know ;)

Just so that people are aware, this is fixed. An upgrade is available and there is a post in this forum on how to get it.

Enjoy.
